An homage to the great man himself....Ralph Hotere was one of New Zealand's most inspiring artists.
”I had a "wow" moment when looking at one of Hoteres red crosses on black from his Black Light series at Te Papa many years ago. The simplicity of it and the awe I had for how to paint so accurately such an image. Later on I found out that he had them painted with glossy paint in a car factory! Growing up in Dunedin, I was always aware of his work and have the deepest respect for it. So I decided to play with the letters of his name to make the crosses. There are many combinations I can do with the shapes and colours, so no two are the same.”
Here I have taken the cruciform that he used in so many of his pieces and formed it with the letters of his name. I have an interest in typeface, how it can be skewed and stretched and still resemble the letters they're meant to be.
